Manual Lymphatic Drainage

We are delighted that we now offer Manual Lymphatic Drainage with therapist Nicola O'Hare on Mondays, Thursdays and Wednesday evenings.

You may have heard of Manual Lymphatic Drainage but be a bit un-clear as to what it involves and its benefits. So here's a bit of background about this wonderful complementary therapy.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage was developed in the 1930's by Drs Vodder for the treatment of sinusitis & other immune problems. It is now a widely accepted form of massage; a relaxing treatment to help improve immunity, healing, detoxification & to increase energy. And we could all do a bit of that!!

The lymphatic system consists of the lymph which is a clear fluid that travels through out the body's tissues to cleanse the cells of waste & toxins. The lymph travels to the lymph nodes where it is filtered to remove unwanted substances such as bacteria & viruses which are then safely eliminated from the body.

The lymphatic system doesn't have its own pump. The lymph fluid is moved through the body by the action of breathing & body movement. So a lack of activity reduces lymphatic circulation. This leads to a build up of fluids, waste & toxins resulting in a sluggish feeling & reduced immunity.

Deep breathing exercises & any form of exercise
or movement can help encourage lymph
to move around the body.

Lymphatic drainage massage helps to encourage lymph flow & fluid drainage. This is a very gentle treatment using very light pressure & gentle pumping of the main lymph nodes. A couple of years ago we started the Willow Trading "do you need a bag for that?" campaign. Actually "campaign" is really too strong a term for it. That implies some sort of organisation. It was really just a case of us deciding to ask every customer whether they needed a bag or not, rather than just giving one automatically.

I would say that since we started doing this the number of carrier bags we use (that's paper bags, we've never used plastic) has dropped by about 60%.

Most people when asked, will have a think and then realise that they can easily use their hand bag, ruck sac, bottom of a pram, another carrier bag or even their pocket.

Obviously it's easy in a shop like Willow Trading where the products are small and people aren't coming in to shop for their weekly groceries.

But we are seeing an increase in the number of people who come prepared with their own shopping bag and I have seen signs in both Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer to the same effect. Maybe it is a campaign after all!

Rather than taxing plastic carrier bags we should just encourage shop owners to stop handing out bags willy nilly. Which, of course, is only going to save them money.

I'm sure the practice of giving everyone a bag started as a form of customer service but I don't think any of our customers feel that we're being rude when we ask them if they need a bag. They are very welcome to one if they do. (We'll even gift wrap with a smile).

There are so many attractive shopping bags around now (and shopping trolleys for that matter, courtesy of Habitat and Ikea) that we don't need to look like our grannies going for the messages!

opening hours over the festive season

Our Glasgow store and therapy rooms are open as usual every day up until the 24th of December. Our late nights are on Wednesdays and Thursdays when we are open until 7.30pm for sales and 8.30pm for complementary therapies and the flotation tank. Sundays we are open from 12 - 5.00pm. Every other day we open at 9.30am and close at 6.00pm.

Of course our web site www.willowtrading.co.uk is open 24/7!

We're taking a well earned break on the 25th and 26th of December and on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of January. We're open very day in between so there's plenty of time to book in for a treat or come in for some pampering products. Of course if you've over-indulged you may be in need of a herbal remedy or some of our detox foot pads - always popular at this time of year!!
